Avonlea Reviews

Over the past five years our family has stayed here three times…and two of those times we have brought other family members along as well.
The Inn and the views are absolutely beautiful…as well as wonderful innkeepers that are extremely knowledgeable about the island, first Holly and more recently Sabrina helped make every part of the trip wonderful…we have met great guests every time having wine with them and kind conversations while taking in the extraordinary views looking out the front porch of the house over the sea…Also a pleasant bonus to me is seeing the ferry boats coming and going at all hours, off in the distance. We travel all the way from Maryland to stay here, and to me it’s worth it! 😊

Block Island is a heavenly place on its own, but when you stay at the Avonlea you will have a truly relaxing experience. The house is literally on the beach; you can walk down a short (30-foot?) path through the dunes to access it. The views from the porch are so peaceful; you can see Crescent Beach for miles. My husband and I have stayed at the Avonlea four times, each time in a different room. Our favorites so far have been Ruby, which has a spectacular view, and Pearl, which is on the main floor and has its own entrance. Be advised that the rooms are small; expect to do a bit of shuffling around with your spouse moving between the bed and the wall. The breakfast is delicious, with eggs made to order, fresh fruit, yogurt, and granola, and a variety of breads. Happy Hour features good-quality wine and an assortment of cheese, crackers, and dips. I can’t imagine staying anywhere else when I’m on the island!
We rented the Avonlea for our entire wedding party for our Block Island wedding weekend and could not have been happier. The Avonlea is one of the most beautiful B&Bs on the island & we enjoyed the views from the wrap around porch and front lawn every day. The location is perfect, being right on the beach but also right next to the town. The service from Sabrina, Bobby and the other housekeepers was incredible. We we’re a busy/loud group but they were extremely gracious to all of us and provided amazing breakfast and cocktail hour every day. They prepared charcuterie boards upon request which were fantastic. They even let our dog out to go to the bathroom when we we’re out of the house one evening. We made amazing memories at the Avonlea and cannot wait to come back in the future. Thank you!!! <3

Blue Dory Inn Reviews

This was our third time staying at the Dory, and it was great. A two minute walk down to the water, nice breakfast included, and extremely friendly and professional staff. Fun shops and restaurants, and lovely scenery. We like to drive around the island listening to books on tape. They provide beach towels. There’s live music across the street. Great air conditioning, too.
The Blue Dory Inn is the perfect place to stay when visiting Block Island, RI! We stayed in both the “Doll House” cottage and “Ocean Sonnet” room. The cottage is your own private oasis, just steps to the beach, a great restaurant and tiki bar. The room was situated high up in a gorgeous historic Inn, complete with a skylight in which to enjoy the wave sounds at night. It was perfect for two, but if you need more room, try the cottage. The innkeeper, Julie became a friend to us during our short stay. She couldn’t have been kinder, more generous, or more helpful to us, thank you! We miss you and hope to be back sometime. The breakfast is cooked as ordered and there is a lovely array of fruit, cereal, muffins and pastries. There is also a wine and cheese hour every day. The unlimited lemonade and “Barnacle Cookies” were a hit, also! These are served downstairs in a cozy, rustic setting, or could be brought up to your room. The property in July was covered with beautiful flowers and had a lot of quaint outdoor space in which to sit and watch all the travelers go by, whether on foot, by scooter or taxi. There is free use of beach chairs and towels for your short walk to go swimming, as well! The walk from the ferry was short and the Inn is just off of the main tourist area, so nice and quiet. You can easily walk to both shops and pizza. Pet-friendly, also. The prices are reasonable, and we highly recommend coming to stay here at the Blue Dory Inn, it was AMAZING!

When I decided to gift myself a few days stay at the Blue Dory in June, a solo respite from my several weeks drive around New England and points south to see much missed friends and family, I thought, “This looks nice. A bit of splurge, maybe, but I’ll likely need some stillness in the middle of my travels… and how fun! A ferry ride to an island…”. When I boarded the boat and looked out, as we made our hour- long sea journey to the slowly approaching line of land where I hoped to rest and reflect I thought, “This is wonderful…Just what I need”. And when I arrived at the Blue Dory I was utterly convinced that I could not have possibly picked a more perfect place to spend my stay. Block Island is more lovely than I could have imagined- the care taken to protect the land, the curve of the soft sand beach, the food and art and walking trails… there is so much to explore! And the Blue Dory provides the perfect starting point – a warm welcome, generous hospitality, and a sweet, sweet spot to rest your head. I’m already plotting a course for my return!

Cottage & Suites - Reviews

My wife and I recently stayed at the Waverly 1 cottage at the Blue Dory and absolutely loved our entire stay. We had beach access from the of the cottage and street access from the front door. The location is perfectly situated on the beach, close to shops and restaurants, and walking distance to the ferry. The sunrise on the ocean was breathtaking. The staff is so friendly and welcoming. Bobby and Ann treated us like family during our stay. Breakfast was included. Eggs made fresh for us every morning along with fresh fruit, oatmeal, muffins, toast, bagels and other extras. They also offered complimentary wine and cheese at 5pm every night. We have stayed at a few different
cottages on the property and a couple rooms in the Inn and always enjoyed our stays. Huge plus that we can bring our dog too! We already want to plan our next trip back!!

If you have visited Block Island as a family of 5 and/or with a pet, you know that fitting accommodations are in short supply. We chose the Dory Cottage at Blue Dory Inn for its space for 5, its location right in town, its proximity to the beach, and the opportunity to have our small dog with us. The fact that breakfast as well as 5 pm snacks, lemonade, and wine are included were a plus. We were not disappointed. From the very pleasant and helpful manager, Julie, to the friendly, attentive staff, Maria and Lilly, to the ease with which you can experience the island with the Blue Dory as your home base, we were happy with our choice. There was room for all our bikes in the inn’s private rack, there was a path to the beach right behind our cottage, we could walk to dining, shopping, tourist info, Abrams Animal Farm, the ferry, the grocery store, and any car/moped/bike rentals we would have wanted. Julie was very kind to allow us to leave our luggage in the parlor after check out at 11 am. We caught the 3 pm ferry back to the mainland and it was helpful to have our luggage at the inn and to have access to the powder room before we left.

After walking by other accommodations, I asked my kids if they would have preferred to stay elsewhere and they all said no. My husband, who had to work while there, had remote meetings at the kitchen table with a view of the ocean. It’s nice to have a happy crew.

I was very nervous to travel with two toddlers, especially during COVID, but the staff at the Blue Dory Inn eased all my worries. We stayed at the three-bedroom Sherman Cottage. With a full home of amenities including two full bathrooms, an outdoor shower, a full kitchen, a private entrance, a deck off the master where you can watch a sunset and parking, it was the perfect place to stay for a family with young children. The hotel is located right across the street from the Block Island Library, all the shops, and restaurants, with the beach as your backyard. The hotel provided fresh beach towels every day, beach chairs, a pack n ’play, high chair, and a baby gate for my youngest. My children actually slept very well! My family didn’t want to leave! Bobbi, the reservationist, was so patient with my many questions leading up to the trip, and Anne, at the front desk, was just the sweetest! Thank you to the Blue Dory, we will be back to visit soon enough!
