The Best Block Island Lighthouses
There are two historic Block Island Lighthouses; the North Light and the South Light. Both Block Island lighthouses are open to the public, and they also have gift shops and museums attached to them so that you can learn more about Block Island’s history.
The Block Island North Light, located at Sandy Point, is a beautiful structure built in 1868. What stands today is actually not the original structure. This is the fourth lighthouse to have been built in this location, and it was restored most recently in the 1990s
This version was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974. Today’s building, made of granite and iron, is as unique as it is beautiful. It sits majestically on the island’s northern end, towering above the beach grass and sand dunes. There’s a museum on the first floor of the lighthouse, but you can no longer access the tower.
The North Light is about ten minutes from the Block Island Ferry and our Block Island hotels. You can quickly get there by bike or car. It will take around twenty minutes from the parking lot to walk out to the North Light – but the walk is more than worth the trek. It’s one of the most serene places on Block Island!
Perhaps the most recognizable of the Block Island Lighthouses is the beautiful brick structure known as the Southeast Light. It’s also the closest to our Block Island hotels, just around 6 minutes away. The Southeast Light is located on the stunning Mohegan Bluffs, one of the most scenic places on Block Island.
The Southeast Light, built in 1874, sits atop the cliffs overlooking the ocean. The red brick structure was built in the Gothic Style, and it stands today as one of the most unique lighthouses in the country. Visitors can tour the main floor of the lighthouse, where you’ll find another excellent museum, as well as the tower. Climbing to the top of this tower offers a breathtaking view of Block Island and the surrounding waters.
