Block Island is a heavenly place on its own, but when you stay at the Avonlea you will have a truly relaxing experience. The house is literally on the beach; you can walk down a short (30-foot?) path through the dunes to access it. The views from the porch are so peaceful; you can see Crescent Beach for miles. My husband and I have stayed at the Avonlea four times, each time in a different room. Our favorites so far have been Ruby, which has a spectacular view, and Pearl, which is on the main floor and has its own entrance. Be advised that the rooms are small; expect to do a bit of shuffling around with your spouse moving between the bed and the wall. The breakfast is delicious, with eggs made to order, fresh fruit, yogurt, and granola, and a variety of breads. Happy Hour features good-quality wine and an assortment of cheese, crackers, and dips. I can’t imagine staying anywhere else when I’m on the island!
